Fence FAQ

Fence questions, answered straight.

These are the questions Northwest Arkansas homeowners ask us most, from what a fence costs to why pine boards warp. Short answers, from a crew that has been building fences here since 2003.

Price and payment

Estimates, cost and financing

We do not publish set prices, because no two yards are the same. Here is how you get a real number.

Pricing depends on the material, the style, the total length, the number and style of gates, and whether an old fence has to come out first. We offer straightforward, honest pricing with no hidden fees, but every yard is different, so we do not publish set prices. A free estimate, in person or through the online design tool, gives you a real number.

Yes, with our online design tool. Enter your address, draw your fence layout on a satellite map, pick a style and the price comes up on the spot, with no waiting and no phone tag. Because every project is different we do not publish set prices, and an on-site visit is still the best way to confirm the final number.

We prefer to see the project in person before giving you a number. Terrain, access and existing structures all change the cost, and an on-site estimate means the price we quote is one we can stand behind. There is no charge for the visit.

Yes, through Lyon Financial. Apply online, choose Builder/Contractor Referral and enter Privacy Fence NWA. A Lyon Financial representative contacts you directly with your options.

What to build, and how it ages

Styles, materials and upkeep

Pine or cedar, wood or metal, stained or left to weather. What each choice means over the years.

That is one of the best questions you can ask, and it is exactly why we offer free on-site estimates. Every property is different, and the right fence depends on your goals, your yard and your budget. If you want some inspiration first, browse our recent work. When we come out we listen to what you have in mind, share what has worked well for other Northwest Arkansas homeowners and help you land on the best solution for your project.

We offer most any fence style you have in mind, including wood, cedar, vinyl, chain link and ornamental iron. If your property calls for something custom, we have the skill set to make it happen. As with most things, you get what you pay for, and a well-built fence shows it.

Wood privacy fencing is the most common choice for homeowners because it provides privacy, security and a natural appearance. Board-on-board, shadow box and spaced picket are all built in pressure-treated pine or cedar.

Chain link needs virtually no maintenance and is the lowest-maintenance fence we offer. Ornamental metal is another low-maintenance choice. Vinyl is easy to care for but can develop mildew over time and needs an occasional cleaning. Wood is a beautiful natural option, but it asks for the most upkeep. Staining, sealing and some warping over time come with owning a wood fence.

It depends on the wood. We use pressure-treated pine, which helps protect against moisture, rot and insects. Cedar is naturally resistant to rot, decay and insects, so it does not need pressure treatment, which is one reason it is such a popular and long-lasting choice.

Yes, we recommend it. Staining helps protect the wood from moisture, sun and weather, and it can extend the life of the fence and keep it looking good. We do not do the staining ourselves. It is handled by our family company, Local Stain of Northwest Arkansas, once new wood has dried to 14 percent moisture or below, and it is scheduled and billed separately.

Warping in a wood fence usually comes down to two things, wood species and weather. Pressure-treated pine is especially prone to it. About 20 years ago the EPA phased out CCA (chromated copper arsenate) in residential lumber over environmental and health concerns. The treatments that replaced it are safer, but they do not stabilize the wood the same way, which leaves it more vulnerable to heat, humidity and rain. The good news is that proper installation, quality sealing and routine maintenance go a long way toward minimizing warping.

Before and during the build

Permits, utilities and installation

What we handle before the first post goes in, and what a build day looks like.

Yes. Once your project is awarded we handle the whole permit process. It saves you the hassle, and it tells us the exact easements and setbacks for your property. If the boundaries are unclear we may recommend a survey before we break ground.

Yes, and we take it seriously. We are happy to help you look for existing property pins and talk through fence placement at the estimate. If the boundaries are unclear, we may recommend a survey before installation begins. Getting this right from the start protects you, your neighbors and your investment.

Yes. Before any digging we contact Arkansas 811 (ARUPS) to have underground utilities marked. It is a standard part of every job.

In most cases, no. Customer-supplied materials almost always have something missing, which costs more in the long run. We buy in bulk, store materials at our facility and load everything for your job before we arrive.

Sloped yards are common in Northwest Arkansas. We build every fence custom on site rather than using pre-fabricated panels, so the fence follows the lay of the land without the big gaps at the bottom that panels leave. Horizontal styles are harder to execute on steep slopes, and we will say so at the estimate.

Posts typically go 24 to 36 inches deep, depending on the height and style of the fence. Certain styles, such as cap-and-trim or horizontal fences, may need longer posts.

Most residential fences are done in one to two days. Larger projects, tricky terrain and weather can add time, and we give you a realistic timeframe at the estimate. You do not need to be home as long as we have access and the gate locations are confirmed.

No. As long as we have access to the work area and the gate locations are confirmed, you do not need to be home.

Whenever you are ready. We install year-round and do our best to work around your schedule. We will always be upfront about our availability and give you a realistic timeframe.

We haul it back to our facility and take it to a Class 4 construction material landfill. We never burn old fence material.
